VISA’s for India are a complicated issue and have a cost associated with them. The best source of up to date information in the Indian High Commission in London and their web site with details, costs, options, logistics etc. is http://hcilondon.in/visa.phpn

At the time of going to press there are 13 types of Visa to India (or 14 if you include the fast track business visa. .The Tourist Visa has a validity of six months from date of issue. This is the standard although apparently longer periods are issued up to five years.

Those visiting this web site are probably more concerned with getting a Business Visa. The system that used to involve queuing up outside India House in the Strand/Aldwych London. That function has been outsourced since 2008 to VF Service UK Ltd. who have five India Visa Application Centres (IVACs) at

60-62 Wilton Road, Victoria, London SW1V 1DE; and
    142-148 Goswell Road, London EC1V 1DE.
    1-3 Canalside, Uxbridge Road, Hayes UB4 0JN
No.20-21 Pemberton Street, Jewellery Quarter, Hockley Birmingham B18 6NY
Hanover Buildings, Rose Street, Edinburgh EH2 2NN

You can submit a business visa application on line (followed by post or personal appointment to one of the above), completely by post, or by ‘dropping in’ to one of the above (probably best to make an online apportionment) or using agents/travel agents. The systems seems to run efficiently.

Business visas may be valid for 6 months to one year or more with single or multiple entries. A fast track, short notice business visa has been introduced from March 2010.
