Names are quite interesting and confusing. We have always followed the idea of sticking to addressing people formally until given the introduction to use more familiar names. And be prepared to be addressed and spoken of by your surname. Some Indian names appear very long and complex to the English ear, ask and get advice about pronunciations. No doubt we have got it wrong many times, but do not think we have ever been corrected, but getting it right is courteous and curtsy is extremely important.

Do not think we have ever come across many Ms’s - a few but not many. - always Miss or Mrs.

Do not be embarrassed bout talking up or reinforcing your job title - these types of symbols of success and authority are important. Rank and position are important and decisions are inevitably pushed upwards to the man or woman at the top.

The people at the top are also a lot more accessible than in Europe. It is not unusual to get a late meeting with a CEO or FD or Operations Director, or Chief Secretary in a ministry.

Treat their business card with respect as well. Always goes down well to read it and keep it in front of you in meetings.
